Keywords and queries are often used interchangeably<\/span><\/h2>\n

But should they be?<\/p>\n

In short, no, they should not be used interchangeably. \u00a0For those of you who are not digital marketers<\/a>, it might not be that much of a difference. \u00a0But for those that are, the differences between the two enormous and definitely should not be ignored. \u00a0Let\u2019s start by defining each one:<\/span><\/p>\n

Keywords<\/b> are the central word(s) for an individual web page. \u00a0For SEO\u2019s sake, it\u2019s a best practice to limit the number of keywords per page to one. \u00a0This ensures the most SEO value<\/a> for your buck. \u00a0How to accomplish this is by creating keyword-rich content on the page, as well as using proper meta titles\/descriptions, image file names, URL structure, and more. \u00a0If your business sells backpacks, then your keyword is \u201cbackpacks,\u201d not synonyms such as bookbags, knapsacks, or satchels. \u00a0If you use the synonyms, then you\u2019re only going to confuse search engines which leads to lower rankings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Search Queries<\/b> are the actual phrase that a user searches. \u00a0These are much more broad and include many unpredictable words for which a user might search such as \u201cBest Nike Backpacks.\u201d \u00a0Queries are an important research tool to get a feel for what exactly your audience is searching for. \u00a0With the information gathered through that research it\u2019s best to adjust your keywords and all of the content that goes with it in order to get those higher ranks. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How does this affect me as a digital marketer?<\/h3>\n

If you are a running an SEO or marketing campaign for a client, odds are one of your first steps in the process was to gather a list of keywords that for which the client wishes to rank. \u00a0From that, you did some keyword analysis and determined which of those you\u2019d like to proceed with, along with a few that you discovered during analysis. \u00a0With that list in hand, start crafting pages for each of the keywords. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From the previous example, if you run a backpack store, one of your biggest sellers is probably Jansport backpacks, so dedicating an entire landing page for Jansport backpacks is the way to go. \u00a0\u201cBut wait, in the picture above you said that \u2018jansport backpack\u2019 is a query, not a keyword!\u201d \u00a0I did, you\u2019re right. \u00a0However, in this instance it is a keyword because that\u2019s the one phrase you are targeting for that specific page; this is what’s called a Long-Tail Keyword!<\/span><\/p>\n
